When considering a new kitchen countertop, there are usually two choices that instantly come to mind:

  1. Granite countertops: the most popular natural stone for kitchen countertops.

  2. Engineered Quartz countertops: a more durable, man-made combination of natural stone and resin.

And although granite and engineered quartz countertops have great applications in many scenarios, there is a third option to choose from if you are looking for an extremely durable and versatile countertop: Dekton by Cosentino.

Dekton is an ultracompact surface, which means it has a very high density, zero porosity, and is extremely durable.

In this buyer’s guide, we’ll go through some of the key features of Dekton by Cosentino surfaces and why we think it is one of the most exciting developments in the world of stone.

What is Dekton?

In short, Dekton is an ultracompact surface by Cosentino, which is made from a combination of porcelain, glass, and quartz.

Dekton is classified as an “engineered stone” as it does not occur naturally in the world.

Key Features of Dekton Surfaces

Dekton is sometimes considered to be the “ultimate” stone surface. Cosentino has engineered Dekton to take the best aspects of all other stones and put them into one stone surface.

UV Resistance

Dekton offers a very high UV resistance and has a superior colour stability when compared to other stones, meaning it won’t fade over time.

Scratch Resistance

Being a highly scratch-resistant surface, you won’t need to worry about your kitchen knife or a fork scratching the surface. You won’t need to worry about what your knife might do to the Dekton, but more so what the Dekton might do to your knife!

(As with all kitchen countertop surfaces, we always recommend using a cutting board when preparing food on your countertop.)

Stain Resistance

Dekton has a very low porosity, meaning that it does not have many small holes for liquid to seep into.

The surface is able to resist accidental stains from common household items, like wine, coffee, ink, and rust. All of these can be wiped away with ease without the use of harsh chemicals.

High Fire and Heat Resistance

Dekton has an excellent resistance to high temperatures. Things like hot utensils, pots, pans, and appliances can all be placed on the surface without having to worry about damaging it.

Abrasion Resistance

Dekton is more resistant to abrasion than natural stone like granite, making it the ideal product for commercial applications which experience high traffic (like flooring).

The surface will not show the effects of wear and tear over time and will last for the entire life of the product, never needing to be replaced or retouched.

Resistance to Freezing and Thawing

Dekton is super resistant to thermal shock due to its low thermal expansion coefficient (how an object changes in size based on its temperature). Dekton can go from extreme heat to extreme cold without breaking a sweat.

Colour Selection and Design Options

Dekton comes in a variety of colours and styles to suit the needs of even the most discerning individual.

Unlike natural stone, you can rest assured that a sample of Dekton will appear exactly the same as the finished product.

Dekton also has the unique ability to have whatever design or logo or photo you wish to have screen printed onto the stone. If you want to replicate a wallpaper or specific design or picture, Cosentino is able to achieve that using Dekton surfaces.

Large Format and Various Thicknesses

Dekton is available in large format sizes, making it a great choice for any project that requires a slab that would normally be considered “oversized.”

In addition, Dekton is available in 6mm, 8mm, 12mm, and 2cm thicknesses, adding additional versatility to the product.

Best Applications for Dekton Surfaces

With all of those incredible features, it’s hard to think of an application that Dekton wouldn’t be good for. However, here are some of our favourite applications for Dekton compact surfaces.

Kitchen Countertops and Backsplashes

Of course, first and foremost, we love Dekton for kitchen applications. A Dekton kitchen countertop will last for an incredibly long time without the need for regular maintenance or repair.

Dekton can be matched to fit your backsplash, creating a seamless and elegant look.

Flooring

With its incredible abrasion resistance and durability, Dekton compact surfaces are a great choice for flooring applications in your home.

Because of its large format availability, Dekton can be used to create a more unique look when it comes to the flooring in your home.

Sidings

Dekton can be used as interior wall sidings in order to create an elegant and luxurious look and feel to any space in your home.

And again, due to its ability to be sized in large formats, the ceiling’s the limit when it comes to indoor applications.

Fireplaces

Due to its very high heat resistance, Dekton is perfect for fireplaces, both wood burning and electrical.

Outdoor Kitchens

Dekton boasts a very high UV resistance, making it ideal for outdoor applications, like backyard kitchens, where the stone may be exposed to the harsh rays of the sun for extended periods of time.
